The Finnish summer

A big part in a Finn's life: the saunas and the summer. When the summer holidays start, people usually drive to their own summer-house near some lake or the sea. There they have a sauna and you spend a lot of time there in the summer. A "normal" summer cottage is far from the city, and that is because you should go there and relax too! You maybe have family or other people near you int their summer cottages. When you go back to the city, you buy all of your food for the next time you are going back. Living in a summer-house is mostly swimming and being in the sauna. Some people have parties to their friends or family, other just stay there to relax. Whatever you choose to do, the Finnish summer is something you should experience!

The summer for young people

One essential thing for young people (16 and up) are the summer rock-festivals.

In Europe there are festivals too, but Finland is the country with most rock-festivals in the summer. Young people go there to listen to rock groups, meet new people and have fun.

Some of the Finnish festivals:
  • Rantarock in Vaasa
  • Provinssirock in Seinäjoki
  • Ankkarock in Korso
  • Ruisrock in Ruissalo
  • Pipefest in Vuokatti (a hip-hop festival)
If you don't like rock-, pop music you can go to the electronic music-festival, Koneisto. There are no bands playing, only DJs and the main thing to do there is to dance.
More festivals

There are more festivals too, not just for the young people.

  • Kaustisten folk Music Festival in Kaustinen
  • Down By The Laituri in Turku
  • Pori Jazz in Pori
  • Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival
  • Savonlinna Opera festival
  • Tango festival in Seinäjoki
  • Kuopio Dance festival

A festival in the beginning of autumn is "The Helsinki Festival" 23.8-8.9 2002. It contains weeks of art etc. and on "The night of Arts" people can go to different places all over the city and watch performings in bars or in a park.
